Are we witnessing a resurgence of small cars? With the Slate Truck, Amble’s dune buggy, and the Fiat Topolino, plus a whole universe of kei cars and trucks from Japan boasting their own dedicated fanbase, the landscape is shifting. While microcar sales in the US remain as modest as the vehicles themselves, there are hints that Americans might be more open to downsizing than previously thought.

Enter Chip Motors, a Miami-based startup that has unveiled an irresistibly boxy, open-air electric vehicle that’s hard to categorize. Is it a golf cart? A shrunken Jeep Wrangler? Maybe a mix of both?

Chip is dubbed a “life utility vehicle,” or LUV for short, but it’s more accurately a low-speed vehicle (LSV), akin to neighborhood electric vehicles from various manufacturers. With a top speed of 25 mph, it’s only street-legal on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or lower. Designed as a second vehicle for quick trips to the grocery store or picking up kids, it features a roll bar and a flat battery pack along the floor for occupant safety. An LED screen on the front bumper serves as Chip’s digital “face,” responding to verbal commands with a smile. Plus, it can park itself using teleoperation, with aspirations of achieving fully autonomous driving in the future.

In terms of hardware, Chip is powered by in-wheel motors and a 15 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery that can recharge overnight on a standard 110-volt outlet or in four hours with a Level 2/240-volt charger via a NACS charge port. The company notes that charge times are “illustrative,” pending final specifications. The LFP battery offers an estimated range of 100 miles, though that’s just an estimate. Chip comes in four- and six-seat configurations, starting at $15,000 and $18,000, respectively. Reservations can be made for $250, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027.

While microcars may seem like a niche in the US, golf cart sales have been steadily increasing since the pandemic, according to Chip Motors CEO Jameson Detweiler. However, Chip aims to be more than just a fancy golf cart. Detweiler envisions the tiny EV as a way to capture the sense of freedom associated with scooters and bicycles while minimizing the “mental overhead” of traditional car ownership.

“It’s not small; it’s light,” Detweiler explained. “It’s designed to be hyper-functional and, of course, cool!”

A seasoned entrepreneur, Detweiler sold his camera tech company to a major e-scooter operator in Europe in 2022 before fully committing to Chip, a project he’s been developing for nearly 15 years. The concept emerged from discussions he had while living in a hacker house in San Francisco, focusing on trends in urban living and transportation. He believes that relying on large, heavy, and expensive vehicles for short local trips is inefficient. As autonomous technology advances, he argues, transportation systems will become more efficient by matching vehicles to their intended tasks.

The pandemic allowed golf carts to “escape the golf communities,” Detweiler noted, with young families in warmer climates increasingly using them as second vehicles for short trips. This raised his curiosity: Where were the appealing electric alternatives?

Sure, small cars like Nissan Versas, Mini Coopers, and Honda Fits exist, all capable of highway driving and typically priced similarly to Chip’s EV. However, Detweiler argues that many compact European-style vehicles aren’t suited for the American market, as they aren’t designed to safely coexist with larger pickup trucks and SUVs. In contrast, Chip is engineered specifically for US conditions.

Beyond functionality, Chip aims to evoke emotional appeal. Detweiler wants the vehicle to be unique and expressive, not just affordable. The lower cost of ownership, from zero gas expenses to reduced insurance premiums, could make Chip an attractive option for various consumers.

Then there’s the self-driving feature—or, to start, a remote driving capability called “Chip Go!” The idea is that owners can summon their Chip EVs with a tap on an app or even a voice command. They can instruct it to park itself or send it out to run errands without anyone behind the wheel.

Detweiler believes that driving can be enjoyable, but parking is often a hassle. Drawing from his own experiences in Miami with two young children, he finds navigating parking garages and unloading kids and strollers to be the most challenging part of any outing. While Chip aims for Level 4 autonomy eventually, it currently requires remote operators to enable these features.

Regarding latency concerns, Detweiler explained that cellular networks are adept at managing latency spikes. Since Chip’s vehicles operate below 25 mph on neighborhood streets, teleoperation is significantly easier than managing high-speed highway driving. However, he refrained from providing specific details about the teleoperation system, indicating that the company plans to continue its development. Chip intends to take legal responsibility for its vehicles while they are being remotely operated.

“I believe that we are going to be the first mass-market American robot,” Detweiler stated. He envisions a vehicle that interacts with families, connects to calendars, monitors traffic, and reminds owners when to leave earlier than planned.

But the big question remains: Is America ready for a microcar revolution? Detweiler believes so, citing the company’s research indicating that the segment has grown approximately 15 percent annually since 2021. Chip has broader ambitions, exploring weatherproofed vehicles for colder climates and more highway-capable versions.

Unlike many modern EVs, reaching 60 mph might take “a few minutes,” Detweiler joked—later clarifying it could be done in just eight seconds—but this future vehicle will excel in autonomy and everyday usability. Today, it may serve as the perfect second car, but with the rise of robotaxis, it could become the only vehicle you ever need.
