Purchasing a new or used vehicle brings both satisfaction and enjoyment, but the inevitable depreciation as the vehicle ages can be less appealing. While depreciation is often unavoidable, certain vehicles are known to retain their value more effectively once they enter the used car market.
Though information on vehicles that hold their value best is not easily accessible, informed shoppers can utilize this data to select vehicles that depreciate less over time. The experts at Edmunds analyzed sales transaction data, comparing the average transaction prices of used 2023 model-year SUVs with their original manufacturer’s suggested retail prices, identifying the top two SUVs in five size categories that maintain their value effectively. These rankings pertain specifically to the 2023 model year but can also serve as reliable options for those considering new 2026 models.
In the extra-small SUV category, the Toyota Corolla Cross stands out as a practical and budget-friendly option. It features many standard driver assistance features and provides ample cargo space for its size. The Corolla Cross may lack flashiness, but it boasts an impressive retention rate of 81.7% of its original value after three years of ownership.
Following closely is the Honda HR-V, which appeals to those seeking practicality in an SUV. Edmunds highlighted the HR-V’s spacious passenger area and cargo volume, although its acceleration was noted as a downside.
Among small SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 excels in fundamental aspects. It offers comfort, ample room, and a variety of trim levels catering to different budgets. The RAV4 also enjoys strong performance in crash tests and excellent fuel economy, leading to a residual value of 81.4% in the analysis.
Just behind is the popular Honda CR-V, which is recognized for its smooth ride and user-friendly technology. Edmunds praised the CR-V for its accommodating driving experience, spacious cargo area, and impressive fuel efficiency, particularly with its hybrid option.
In the midsize SUV segment, the Toyota 4Runner appeals to those who appreciate a rugged design and genuine off-road capability. Based on the Tacoma pickup, the 4Runner continues to cater to traditional SUV enthusiasts seeking real off-road performance. After three years, it retains an average of 83% of its value, the highest among the SUVs mentioned.
For those seeking a vehicle with a more adventurous design, the Ford Bronco presents an appealing option. Its retro styling, exceptional off-road capability, and extensive customization options enhance its attractiveness.
In the midsize three-row SUV category, the Toyota Highlander has been a favored choice for over two decades. The latest version offers a comfortable driving experience and excellent fuel efficiency, particularly with the Highlander Hybrid model, which retains 77% of its value after three years, despite a smaller third-row seat.
In second place is the Honda Pilot, known for its spaciousness and cargo capacity, ideal for families. While it offers a larger third-row seat than the Highlander, it currently lacks a hybrid version.
For large three-row SUVs, the Toyota Sequoia attracts buyers seeking maximum space and strong performance. Its hybrid engine delivers impressive power, with a residual value of 80% after three years, ensuring that this large SUV remains a sound investment.
The Chevrolet Tahoe ranks second in the large three-row SUV category, featuring two powerful V8 engines and a turbocharged diesel six-cylinder, making it suitable for towing heavy loads. The Tahoe also incorporates the latest technology from Chevrolet.
Edmunds emphasizes that purchasing an SUV, regardless of its size, represents a significant investment. Understanding which vehicles maintain their value can provide additional peace of mind for prospective buyers.
