Range Rover electric can wade 900mm of water, climb 45° slopes and add 200km range in 10 mins
Orders open: The Range Rover Electric is Range Rover’s first fully electric SUV, with orders now open in several markets. In the UK, prices start at £154,070 for the Autobiography short-wheelbase version, while the US starting price is $138,000. The SUV is built at JLR’s Solihull plant alongside Range Rover models with combustion, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Twin motors: The Range Rover Electric uses two 260kW permanent-magnet electric motors, one on each axle, producing a combined 405kW, or up to 542hp, and 850Nm of torque. JLR says the torque figure is higher than that of any previous Range Rover. The SUV can accelerate from 0-60mph (0-97km/h) in as little as 4.3 seconds and from 50-75mph (80-121km/h) in 2.7 seconds. Battery boost: Power comes from a 118.5kWh lithium-ion battery with 344 prismatic cells arranged in a double-stack layout. The battery uses an 800-volt electrical architecture with split-charging capability and supports peak DC charging of 350kW. Range Rover quotes a maximum WLTP range of 372 miles (599km), while the US EPA rating is up to 333 miles (536km). 22-minute charge: With a 350kW DC fast charger, the Range Rover Electric can charge from 10% to 80% in around 22 minutes. JLR says it can add up to 125 miles (201km) of EPA-rated range in 10 minutes when charging at its maximum rate. The 800-volt system also supports split charging, allowing the vehicle to use 400-volt charging infrastructure. Faster traction: The Range Rover Electric uses Integrated Traction Management to control motor response in as little as 50 milliseconds. JLR says this is up to 100 times faster than an equivalent combustion-engine system. Intelligent Driveline Dynamics can vary rear-axle torque from zero to 100% to help maintain traction. The system is designed to provide precise control across different road and off-road surfaces. 900mm wading: The electric SUV can wade through up to 900mm, or 35 inches, of water. Single Pedal mode allows it to pull away on slopes of up to 33 degrees and complete rolling climbs of up to 45 degrees. A twin-chamber air suspension system and a lower centre of gravity than combustion-powered versions are designed to improve stability, while the vehicle retains 450mm of wheel articulation. Tested worldwide: JLR says the Range Rover Electric completed more than 1.5 million kilometres of physical testing and over 250,000 hours of virtual testing. Development included testing in temperatures as low as -40°C in Arjeplog, Sweden, the Dubai desert and JLR’s Eastnor Castle facility in the UK. More than 300 patent applications have also been filed for technologies developed for the vehicle. Battery tracking: The SUV uses JLR’s ThermAssist heat management system to manage temperature across the battery, electric motors, electronics and cabin. The company says it can add up to 25 miles (40km) of range and reduce heating energy use by 40% in relevant conditions. A Battery Digital Twin monitors more than 900 diagnostic data points, while over-the-air updates support predictive maintenance. Made in UK: Range Rover Electric production takes place at Solihull using the same vehicle architecture and production line as combustion, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. JLR has trained 9,000 employees at the plant for electrification, with another 1,500 trained across the wider West Midlands operation. Its Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton produces the battery packs and electric drive units. Versions and rivals: The Range Rover Electric is available in short- and long-wheelbase forms, with Autobiography, SV, SV Black and SV Ultra specifications depending on the market. It competes with electric SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology and BMW iX3, while its price and positioning also bring it close to luxury combustion SUVs such as the Bentley Bentayga. Pajero returns: Mitsubishi Motors has unveiled the all-new Pajero, bringing back the nameplate as a new-generation flagship cross-country SUV. New design: The new Pajero uses an upright body with strong horizontal lines and design elements linked to earlier generations. It gets T-shaped headlights and two grille designs, while the C-pillar draws inspiration from the roll bar of the first-generation Pajero. At the rear, a hexagonal design element references the spare wheel used on earlier models. The SUV also gets 20-inch wheels on selected specifications. 230mm clearance: The Pajero measures 4,920mm long, 1,925mm wide and 1,910mm high, with a 2,870mm wheelbase. Mitsubishi says the SUV has a 52:48 front-to-rear weight distribution and a suspension designed to maintain tyre contact over uneven surfaces. 480Nm diesel: The new Pajero is powered by a specially developed 2.4-litre clean-diesel engine with a wide-range single variable-geometry turbocharger. Mitsubishi officially lists maximum torque at 480Nm and pairs the engine with a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission with a Sport mode. The company has not officially disclosed the engine’s maximum power output, so the reported 204hp figure should not be presented as confirmed. 4WD system: The Pajero gets Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system, with 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc settings. The latter provides low-range gearing for off-road driving. The SUV also uses Mitsubishi’s Super-All Wheel Control system, which integrates Active Yaw Control, stability and traction control, and ABS to manage driving and braking forces at the four wheels according to road and driving conditions. Seven drive modes — Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock — are available to adapt the SUV to different surfaces. Seven seats: The Pajero has a three-row, seven-seat cabin with a horizontally oriented dashboard. Higher specifications get two 14.3-inch displays, while selected versions use a 12.3-inch display. The Multi Meter brings back the earlier Pajero’s triple-gauge concept in digital form, showing information such as altitude, compass direction, temperature, vehicle pitch and roll angles, and Active Yaw Control status. Safety tech: The new Pajero gets three-zone automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone connectivity and a 12-speaker Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate audio system. Safety and driver-assistance equipment includes eight airbags, Forward Collision Mitigation, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Emergency Lane Assist, Front Cross Traffic Alert and MI-PILOT, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance.
