MARUTI SUZUKI DZIRE: HOW DID A SEDAN BECOME THE LARGEST-SELLING CAR IN A MARKET DOMINATED BY SUVS?

In FY26, 26,70,000 units of SUVs were sold in India, with the SUV segment accounting for nearly 57% of all the cars sold in the country. Despite the growing popularity of SUVs, a sedan became the largest-selling car in India. It was none other than the Maruti Suzuki Dzire.

As many as 47,07,000 units of passenger vehicles (PVs) were sold in India in FY26. While this was the highest-ever car sales in the country, Maruti Suzuki India sold 2,29,130 units of the Dzire alone, a jump of 38.85% from 1,65,021 units in the previous fiscal.

The Dzire contributed 4.87% to the total car sales in India in FY26. At 2,29,130 units, the Dzire also notched up the best-ever annual sales figures for any car in India.

The Dzire also drove the sedan segment in India. It had a share of 67% in its own compact sedan segment and 57% in the overall sedan segment.

Factors working in favour of Maruti Suzuki Dzire

First of all, the Dzire is a very diligently priced car. It does not put a heavy strain on a buyer's pocket. At a time when cars are increasingly becoming relatively expensive due to rising input costs, the Dzire sits in the price bracket of Rs 6,25,600 to Rs 9,31,300 (ex-showroom). The price range clearly depicts that this car is aimed at mass buyers.

The Dzire employs Suzuki's new Z-Series, 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine. This mill produces 81.58PS of power and 111.7Nm of peak torque. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 5-speed AMT. A CNG version is also offered. It delivers 69.75PS and 101.8Nm of torque and is available with a 5-speed manual transmission.

The Dzire does not cater to performance-focussed buyers. Fuel efficiency is its USP, and it does deliver in that aspect. Maruti Suzuki claims the Dzire mileage to be 24.79km/l for the petrol manual version, 25.71km/l for the petrol AMT and 33.73km/kg for the CNG manual.

Also, the Dzire is a very reliable car. Hence, its high usage in the fleet segment. But the part about reliability is true for most of the Maruti Suzuki cars. They are not very feature-heavy. But all the bells and whistles in them work fine, which is what a lot of customers want.

For its character and price point, the Dzire offers quite a few useful features. It gets LED headlamps and taillamps, 15-inch alloy wheels, dual-tone cabin layout, 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Arkamys-tuned audio, 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, cruise control, electric sunroof and Suzuki Connect connected car technology.

The Dzire is also one of the safest cars in India, having secured a 5-star safety rating in both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP. It is based on Maruti Suzuki's fifth-generation Heartect platform with high-tensile steel accounting for 45% of the body structure. It comes with standard safety equipment like six airbags, electronic stability program, hill-hold assist, ABS with EBD, brake assist and three-point seatbelts for all seats.

And then, there is Maruti Suzuki's wide service network to support its customers. The company's total after-sales service network has reached 5,926 touchpoints now, covering 3,000 cities and towns in India.
